Helikon Opera is a Russian opera company founded in Moscow in 1990 by Dmitry Bertman, specializing in unconventional and rarely performed works. The company's principal venue is the 250-seat Mayakovsky Theater, a neoclassical former ballroom housed in the palace of the Shakhovskoi-Glebov-Streshneva family, prominent 19th-century Moscow patrons of the arts. Helikon Opera gave its inaugural performance with Stravinsky's *Mavra* on April 10, 1990, and has since become known for its ambitious programming, presenting both canonical works and chamber operas, including notable revivals such as Tchaikovsky's *Undine* (1994) and Prokofiev's *The Ugly Duckling* (1992). The company maintains a rigorous performance schedule of approximately 200 productions annually, performing throughout Moscow and internationally, including tours to the United Kingdom beginning in 1997.
