The Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Mykola Lysenko stands as a postmodern structure in Kharkiv, Ukraine, completed in 1991 and clad in distinctive tufa tiles. Originally established in 1925, the theater has evolved into a significant cultural venue and community gathering space. The building has hosted notable performances, including a 2019 production of Swan Lake choreographed by Johan Nus that employed 42 tons of water as a theatrical element. Beyond its formal role as an opera and ballet house, the venue serves as an informal social hub; architectural studies have documented its popularity with skateboarders and its importance to the local community. The theater also held ceremonial significance, hosting the funeral of Kharkiv mayor Hennadii Kernes in December 2020.
