The Private Opera was a Moscow opera house founded in 1885 by Russian industrialist and philanthropist Savva Mamontov, who not only established the enterprise but personally staged the operas, conducted the orchestra, trained the actors, and taught singing while financing the entire operation. Known by various names throughout its history—including Mamontov's Private Russian Opera, Korotkov's Theatre, Vinter's Theatre, and later the Solodovnikov Theatre—this private operatic venture became an important cultural institution that subsequently hosted the Zimin opera, Moscow Operetta, and Helikon Opera.
