Herlev Hospital, a teaching facility for Copenhagen University medical students located near Copenhagen in Denmark, is a striking example of brutalist design completed in 1976. Designed by Gehrdt Bornebusch in collaboration with Max Brüel and Jørgen Selchau, with landscape architecture by Sven Hansen and artistic decoration by Poul Gernes, the 25-story structure rises 120 metres and was Denmark's tallest building upon completion. Its modern, functional aesthetic combines bright concrete, glass, and bronze-colored aluminum to create a distinctive appearance. Originally named Amtssygehuset i Herlev, the hospital was constructed between 1965 and 1975, opening the following year with 1,616 beds and a substantial staff serving approximately 82,000 patients annually. The building held its record as Denmark's highest until 2022, when it was surpassed by Light House in Aarhus.
