Herrenchiemsee is a baroque revival palace complex on Herreninsel, the largest island in Chiemsee lake in southern Bavaria, approximately 60 kilometres southeast of Munich. Built from 1878 onwards under architect Georg von Dollmann for King Ludwig II, the New Palace (Neues Schloss) was modeled on Versailles and stands as the largest, though ultimately incomplete, of the king's architectural undertakings. The site, which had formerly housed an Augustinian monastery, was purchased by Ludwig in 1873 and converted to include the Old Palace (Altes Schloss). Now maintained by the Bavarian Administration of State-Owned Palaces, Gardens and Lakes and designated both a Bavarian architectural heritage monument and a World Heritage Site, Herrenchiemsee remains a major public attraction.
