Highgate is a London Underground station on Archway Road in the London Borough of Haringey, serving the High Barnet branch of the Northern line between East Finchley and Archway. Originally opened in 1867 as part of the Great Northern Railway's line to Edgware, the station was adapted for Underground use in 1941 when new platforms were constructed in tunnels beneath the surface. Designed by Charles Holden in the modern architectural style characteristic of his Underground work, the station exemplifies mid-twentieth-century transport design. The original 1867 surface station buildings remain, with one converted to a private house, though the surface platforms ceased operation in 1954 and the connecting line to Finsbury Park was closed and removed by 1972.
