Hnevank, an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located near Kurtan in Armenia's Lori Province, dates from the 7th century and continued to develop through the 12th century. Situated on a hilltop within a gorge at the confluence of the Dzoraget and Gargar rivers, the monastery was substantially rebuilt in the late 12th century by Smbat of the House of Orbelian, a noble branch of the Liparitids who had migrated from Georgia into Armenia. The complex comprises a main church with a gavit (a covered portico typical of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture) and scattered service buildings. A Georgian inscription on the drum of the main church documents Smbat's patronage. In recent years, the Armenian government has undertaken restoration work, including a complete reconstruction of the main church's collapsed dome.
