The Hoge vuurtoren van IJmuiden, a round cast-iron lighthouse in Velsen, Netherlands, was designed by architect Quirinus Harder and constructed in 1878 by the Leiden firm D.A. Schretlen & Co. Standing 43 meters tall, it forms one half of a pair of leading lights—together with the shorter Lage vuurtoren—that mark the IJgeul, the North Sea entrance to the North Sea Canal. The lighthouse contains 159 steps and is now unmanned and closed to the public. Designated a Rijksmonument, it remains a notable example of 19th-century Dutch maritime infrastructure.
