The Lage vuurtoren van IJmuiden, a round cast-iron lighthouse standing 24 metres high in Velsen, Netherlands, was designed by Quirinus Harder and constructed in 1878 by the Leiden firm D.A. Schretlen & Co, becoming operational the following year. Originally taller, three of its upper sections were relocated to Vlieland in 1909 to serve as a separate lighthouse, leaving the structure with its present five storeys and 88 steps. The lighthouse was repositioned slightly in 1966. Paired with the Hoge vuurtoren van IJmuiden, it functions as one of two leading lights guiding vessels through the IJgeul, the North Sea entrance to the North Sea Canal. Now unmanned and closed to visitors, it has been designated a Rijksmonument since 1981.
