Built in 1860 for settler and farmer Horace G. Lyons in Shawnee County, Kansas, this limestone house exemplifies the Second Empire and Italianate styles that characterized mid-nineteenth-century residential architecture. The structure was expanded in 1893, reflecting the family's evolving needs and prosperity. Lyons himself became known as a religious author, publishing *The Devil Problem* in 1900, a booklet in which he expounded his belief that moral corruption dwelt within every man. The house remained a family residence until 1977 and was recognized for its historical significance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
