Designed by Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931, India Gate is a 42-meter-high triumphal arch situated on New Delhi's ceremonial axis, now known as Kartavya Path. Originally called the All India War Memorial, this Grade I heritage structure commemorates over 74,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in the First World War between 1914 and 1921, across theaters from France to Mesopotamia to Gallipoli, as well as casualties from the 1919 Afghan War. Drawing inspiration from ancient Roman triumphal arches like Constantine's, it bears the inscribed names of approximately 13,300 servicemen, both British and Indian. Beneath the archway stands the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a black marble memorial with a reversed rifle and eternal flames that served as India's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from 1971 until 2022, when its flame was ceremonially merged with that of the nearby National War Memorial. Today, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, India Gate functions as both a solemn national monument and a vital public gathering space.
