Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and unveiled on 15 December 1921, the Midland Railway War Memorial in Derby commemorates the 2,833 employees of the Midland Railway who died in the First World War. Standing on Midland Road near Derby railway station, the memorial consists of a cenotaph enclosed by a screen wall on three sides, with bronze plaques bearing the names of the dead. The composition features the Midland's coat of arms in laurel wreaths flanking the cenotaph, topped by a catafalque with sculpted lion heads supporting the recumbent effigy of an anonymous soldier, elevated to eye level to evoke personal connection. Built for one of Britain's largest railway companies and Derby's principal employer—which sent roughly 23,000 of its workforce to fight—the memorial remains a Grade II* listed building in the city's conservation area and exemplifies Lutyens's restrained approach to war commemoration.
