Located in Tehran's District 1, the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) is a concrete modernist building completed in 1989 and designed by architect Kamran Diba. Originally established as the Institute for Studies in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, it reflects the Pahlavi and modern architectural styles of its era. Directed by its founder Mohammad-Javad Larijani, IPM is a landmark of Iran's scientific infrastructure—notably the first Iranian organization to connect to the Internet and the administrator of the .ir domain registry. The institute operates across four campuses in the Farmanieh district north of Tehran, conducting fundamental research, hosting international collaborations, and offering advanced doctoral programs in fields including mathematical logic, astronomy, and particle physics.
