The Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai is a Buddhist temple founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported from Myanmar—a seated Buddha standing 1.95 meters tall and weighing 3 tons, and a smaller reclining Buddha representing the Buddha's parinirvana. The temple's current structure dates to 1928 and exemplifies Chinese architectural style. In addition to the original jade statues, the temple now houses a much larger reclining Buddha carved from marble and donated from Singapore, which visitors often mistake for the original piece. The legendary journey of the Burmese jade Buddhas to Shanghai became influential in Chinese temple tradition, spurring the popular adoption of Burmese-style Buddha statues in Chinese temples. Designated as a Shanghai outstanding historical building and a National Key Buddhist Temple in the Han Chinese Area, it remains an important religious and cultural landmark.
