Jaffa Gate is one of the seven principal entrances to Jerusalem's Old City, an Islamic architectural gateway built in 1538 during the Ottoman period. The original structure employs a defensive L-shaped entryway—a medieval design feature that slowed attackers by routing them through two heavily doored passages on the north and east sides. The outer gate opens toward Jaffa Road, the traditional arrival point for pilgrims journeying from the port of Jaffa. In 1898, Ottoman authorities enlarged the fortification by breaching the adjacent wall to create a ceremonial passage for German Emperor Wilhelm II; this gap was subsequently converted into a ramp that now permits vehicular access to the Old City from the west, fundamentally altering the gate's original function while preserving its historic medieval structure.
