The Jama Masjid, officially the Masjid-i-Jehan-Numa, stands in the Old Delhi area as one of India's largest mosques. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656 and constructed of sandstone, it was inaugurated by its first Imam, Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari. Situated in Shahjahanabad, the Mughal capital, the mosque served as the imperial place of worship for Mughal emperors until the empire's collapse in 1857. Beyond its religious function, it symbolized Mughal power across India and held political significance during British rule. Today it remains in active use and is designated a Monument of National Importance, standing as one of Delhi's most iconic structures.
