Located on the Tinu Peninsula approximately 8 kilometres northeast of Nouméa in New Caledonia, the Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre celebrates Kanak indigenous culture and honours the vision of Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the independence movement leader assassinated in 1989. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in June 1998, the centre synthesises traditional Kanak building practices with contemporary international architecture. Its most distinctive feature is a 250-metre-long curved axial composition atop a ridge, comprising ten large conical pavilions of varying dimensions modelled on the traditional Kanak Grand Hut. The surrounding landscape similarly incorporates traditional Kanak design elements, creating a cohesive expression of cultural identity. The building remains classified as a historical monument and stands as both an architectural achievement and a symbolic gesture of recognition for Kanak heritage.
