Perched on a bluff overlooking The Dalles, Oregon, the Joseph D. and Margaret Kelly House stands as a 1908 Queen Anne residence that reflects the pragmatic aesthetics of rural prosperity. Built for Joseph Kelly, a successful wheat farmer who retired early to pursue landlord and business ventures, and his wife Margaret, a teacher from another prominent wheat-farming family, the house embodies a vernacular interpretation of Queen Anne style that contrasts sharply with the ornate Victorian homes elsewhere in town. Its architecture speaks to the Kellys' agrarian roots rather than urban pretension, while their subsequent careers in philanthropy and business cemented their prominence in the community. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
