Kansai International Airport, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, opened on September 4, 1994, on an artificial island in Osaka Bay to serve the Greater Osaka Area and relieve congestion at the closer but landlocked Itami Airport. Located within three municipalities in Osaka Prefecture—Izumisano, Sennan, and Tajiri—approximately 38 kilometers southwest of Osaka Station, the airport comprises two terminals built across two islands totaling 1,055 hectares. Terminal 1, designed by Piano, holds the distinction of being the world's longest airport terminal at 1.7 kilometers in length. A second runway opened in 2007. The airport functions as an international hub for major carriers including All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Peach (Japan's first international low-cost carrier), and serves as the north Pacific hub for FedEx Express. As of 2025, the airport handled 34.1 million passengers annually, with international traffic comprising the majority, and ranked among the world's top ten airports by Skytrax.
