Karlsplatz, located in Vienna's Innere Stadt district, is a major underground transport hub serving three U-Bahn lines (U1, U2, and U4). Designed by Otto Wagner in the Art Nouveau style, the station originally opened on June 30, 1899, as the Academiestrasse station of the Wiener Stadtbahn. It received its current name the same year the adjacent square was dedicated to Karl VI. Following the cessation of steam operation in 1918, electric service resumed in 1925. The station's role expanded significantly when the U1's first underground section opened in 1978, and further with U4 platforms added in 1980, transforming Karlsplatz into Vienna's largest transport interchange.
