The Leonard W. Stanley House, a 2½-story wood-frame residence in Waltham, Massachusetts, was built in 1855–56 by Leonard Stanley, a policeman. Located on the South Side—an area the city acquired from Newton in 1849—it stands as one of the oldest houses in that district and an unusual local example of transitional Federal and Italianate styling. While its basic massing, five-bay facade, and side gable roof follow Federalist conventions, the deep eaves and segmented-arch attic windows reflect Italianate influence. The main block was extended with ells during the 1870s and 1880s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the house represents an important midcentury hybrid of regional architectural traditions.
