The Lotte New York Palace Hotel is a luxury hotel located at the corner of 50th Street and Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The property encompasses the Villard Houses, a landmark complex of three connected buildings arranged in a U-shaped plan around a central courtyard, designed by the prominent architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and built in the 1880s. Behind the historic Villard Houses rises a 51-story modernist skyscraper designed by Emery Roth & Sons, completed in 1980 as part of the original hotel development by Harry Helmsley. The combined complex opened as the Helmsley Palace Hotel in 1981 and has since changed ownership multiple times, including a complete renovation by the Sultan of Brunei in the 1990s. As of 2021, the hotel contains 909 rooms and suites, with the upper floors of the tower designated as the Towers, featuring 176 luxury residential units including ornately decorated triplex suites. The Villard Houses themselves serve as the hotel's lobby and event spaces, successfully merging 19th-century landmark preservation with modern hospitality infrastructure.
