The Madras Record Office, built in 1909 and now known as the Tamil Nadu Archives and Historical Research, is an Indo-Saracenic structure housing one of Southern India's largest and oldest document repositories. Its origins trace to 1672, when record-keeping began at Fort St George's council room. Today it preserves invaluable government records of Tamil Nadu, including extensive British India documentation, Dutch East India Company archives from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and materials relating to southern Princely States. The facility maintains publication capabilities for archival records and produces the official district gazetteers of Tamil Nadu, serving as an essential research institution for scholars of British-era Madras Presidency and post-independence Tamil Nadu.
