The Maj. James W. McMullin House is a Queen Anne style residence in Oskaloosa, Iowa, built in 1882 as an intentional showpiece by a Civil War–era major who had established a prosperous transport and livery business serving the region's coal industry. Originally designed in brick by an unknown architect, cost-conscious modifications led to its construction in wood with a balloon frame and clapboard exterior instead. The house displays characteristic Queen Anne features including an asymmetrical plan, wrap-around porch, and bay windows, while its interiors showcase notably elaborate woodwork and plasterwork. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, the residence exemplifies the ambitions of a successful Gilded Age businessman to create an architecturally distinguished home.
