Marine Gate is a substantial residential building constructed in 1939 in Brighton and Hove, designed by architects Wimperis, Simpson and Guthrie. Originally comprising 105 flats alongside a restaurant and offices, internal modifications later increased the flat count to 132. Situated on a clifftop eastern border overlooking Brighton Marina and Black Rock, the International/Modern-style structure exemplifies the architectural idioms of its era, though its angular Modernist form has provoked sharply divided critical opinion—praised by some as elegant and comparable to the contemporary Embassy Court, yet dismissed by others among the city's poorest buildings. Its exposed position adjacent to a derelict gasworks rendered it particularly vulnerable during World War II, making it Brighton's most heavily bombed building, an ironic distinction that left visible scars on the structure.
