The Market Church stands as the principal Lutheran church of Hanover, Germany, occupying a site where religious structures have stood since 1125. Built in the 14th century and formally documented in 1342, this brick Gothic hall church replaced an earlier sanctuary and became the spiritual center around which the city's market district developed. The building exemplifies the northern German brick Gothic style (norddeutsche Backsteingotik), featuring a monumental saddleback roof that rises above the nave and two aisles. Its western tower, constructed to demonstrate civic power and wealth, ranks among the highest in Lower Saxony. The church was severely damaged during a 1943 air raid, but its roof and vaults were restored in 1952. Today, alongside the nearby Old Town Hall, the Market Church represents the southernmost expression of this distinctive regional architectural tradition and remains a landmark of the city.
