Marshall Field's Wholesale Store in Chicago, a seven-story landmark designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, opened on June 20, 1887, as a dedicated wholesale facility for the Marshall Field department store empire. Executed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style that defined Richardson's practice, the building occupied an entire block bounded by Quincy, Franklin, Adams, and Wells Streets, positioning it near the Chicago Board of Trade Building. The structure served the practical demands of Field's wholesale operations while embodying the monumental architectural vocabulary Richardson championed in his major commercial commissions.
