Located in the village of Garni in Armenia's Kotayk Province, the Mashtots Hayrapet Church was built in 1101 on the site of a former pagan shrine. This small cruciform church with a central plan features a single drum and dome, constructed from dark grey stone with red tufa inlaid around the windows, roof, and dome. The façade displays elaborate geometric and foliage decorations around the windows, portal, and dome, while the interior apse is intricately carved. A distinctive carved stone at the entrance depicts a bird on a floral stem with a rosette of eternity beneath its tail—a pagan symbol of the sun or moon representing life's eternal cycle—creating a visual connection to the shrine it replaced. The grounds contain several khachkars, including one resembling a small shrine near the building.
