Built in 1732 when the area was part of Woburn, this historic Congregational church in Burlington, Massachusetts, stands as one of the oldest religious structures in the state. Originally constructed in the First Period Colonial style, the building underwent significant transformations reflecting changing architectural tastes: in 1846, it was redesigned in the Greek Revival mode with an extended length and a Gothic-influenced steeple, and then in 1888, during the Colonial Revival period, many of these changes were reversed to restore a more Colonial-style steeple. The meetinghouse served as a focal point for community life, hosting critical military and political meetings of American Patriots in 1775. Once affiliated with Massachusetts' state-funded church system, the congregation is now part of the United Church of Christ and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
