Built in 1786 as Vassalboro's first religious structure, the River Meetinghouse served the Quaker community before undergoing a major transformation in 1895. At that time, the chapel was restyled in the Shingle style and fitted with a portico and tower, then converted to non-denominational use by the Oak Grove-Coburn School. Now known as the Oak Grove Chapel or Sophia D. Bailey Chapel, the building stands at the intersection of United States Route 201 and Oak Grove Road and was recognized as a National Register of Historic Places listing in 1977.
