Located in the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida, the Miami Beach Architectural District encompasses 960 historic buildings predominantly designed in the Art Deco style. Built beginning in 1915, the district was officially designated a historic district on May 14, 1979, and appears on the National Register of Historic Places. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Sixth Street to the south, Alton Road to the west, and the Collins Canal and Dade Boulevard to the north, the area gained additional cultural prominence as the residence of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace, who lived in a mansion on Ocean Drive until his assassination there in 1997.
