This Art Deco department store, built in 1929 for Sears, Roebuck and Company in Miami, Florida, was the first known implementation of Art Deco architecture in the county and is considered a spectacular example of the style, predating the celebrated Art Deco hotels on Miami Beach's Ocean Drive. The building later absorbed a former Burdines department store. After the downtown area's decline in the early 1980s, the store closed in 1983 and fell into severe disrepair. The property was donated to Dade County in 1992, and the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The original department store structure was demolished by 2001, leaving only its seven-story tower, which was preserved and incorporated into the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, completed in 2006.
