In Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, the Sears, Roebuck & Company Mail Order Building stands as a monumental Art Deco complex that once anchored the company's western distribution operations. The 1.8-million-square-foot facility combined mail order processing and product distribution with a ground-floor retail store, serving customers from its construction through the late twentieth century. The mail order operation ceased in 1992, followed by the closure of the retail storefront in 2021, leaving the vast majority of the complex vacant. Since the mid-1990s, the building has been the subject of multiple renovation proposals, yet remains largely unutilized, a testament to the scale and ambition of mid-century American retail infrastructure.
