The Milwaukee County War Memorial, situated on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is a brutalist structure designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen. Construction began in 1955 and the building was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1957. A striking mosaic mural by Edmund D. Lewandowski, installed in 1959, adorns the memorial—composed of more than one million pieces of glass and marble, it features abstracted Roman numerals in purple, blue, and black that mark the dates of American involvement in World War II (MCMXLI–MCMXLV) and the Korean War (MCML–MCMLIII).
