Built in 1910, the Morton Theatre in downtown Athens, Georgia, stands as a Beaux-Arts structure of significant cultural importance. Uniquely constructed, owned, and operated by African-American businessman Monroe Morton, it ranks among the first vaudeville theatres in the United States built by an African American. Located at 195 West Washington Street, the theatre has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it functions as a rental venue hosting dramatic, musical, and dance performances alongside special events, continuing its legacy as a cultural landmark in the city's historic district, which was identified as Athens' "Hot Corner" in 2001.
