Myakka River State Park, one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks at 37,000 acres, spans southeastern Manatee County and Sarasota County on the Atlantic coastal plain. Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and formally developed in 1941, the park features National Park Service rustic architecture characteristic of that era. A portion of the park originated as a gift from the family of Bertha Palmer. Named after the Myakka River, designated as Florida's first "Wild and Scenic River," the park is today managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Recreation and Parks in partnership with the Friends of Myakka River.
