The National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa is the country's national art museum, housing one of North America's largest art collections by exhibition space. Founded in 1880 and relocated multiple times—to the Victoria Memorial Museum building in 1911, the Lorne Building in 1960—the institution acquired its current home in 1988 when architect Moshe Safdie designed a striking new complex of glass and granite on Sussex Drive, positioned to offer views toward Parliament Hill. The 46,621-square-meter building dedicates 12,400 square meters to exhibitions of its permanent collection of over 93,000 works spanning European, American, Asian, Canadian, and Indigenous artists, alongside regularly organized travelling exhibitions.
