The New Church of the Theotokos was a monumental Byzantine church erected in Jerusalem by Emperor Justinian I and completed in 543. Originally functioning as a hospital church, this grand structure was severely damaged or destroyed during the Persian conquest of Jerusalem in 614, and subsequently dismantled by the Umayyads for building material. Today only meager ruins survive, discovered during excavations in the Old City's Jewish Quarter, with a portion of the southeast corner extending beyond the 16th-century city walls—all that remains of what was once a vast architectural achievement of the Byzantine era.
