Neuenburg Castle is a Romanesque hilltop fortress in Freyburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, built around 1090 by Thuringian count Ludwig der Springer to secure his eastern territories, paired strategically with Wartburg Castle to the west. Perched above the eastern bank of the Unstrut River, the castle overlooks the wine-growing town of Freyburg below. From 1656 to 1746, it served as a secondary residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels. Now owned and managed by the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation, the castle functions as a museum and is a designated stop on the Romanesque Road, a cultural heritage route through the region.
