Neugebäude Palace, a large Mannerist castle complex in Vienna's Simmering district, was constructed from 1569 onwards under Habsburg Emperor Maximilian II. The palace was built on the site where Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's tent had been erected during the 1529 Siege of Vienna, and the structure itself was modeled after that encampment. The ambitious Renaissance complex fell into disuse by the seventeenth century and now survives as ruins. Since the 1970s, it has been protected as a historical monument, and various restoration efforts have been undertaken. In 1922, architect Clemens Holzmeister's Feuerhalle Simmering, Austria's first crematorium, was integrated into the palace's walled gardens, which contained ancient trees designated as natural monuments and now serve as an urn burial ground.
