Schönbrunn Palace in Hietzing, Vienna, was the principal summer residence of the Habsburg rulers and stands as one of Austria's most significant architectural and cultural monuments. This 1,441-room Baroque structure was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Nicolò Pacassi, with construction beginning in 1638. The palace's name derives from an artesian well that supplied the court with water, literally meaning "beautiful spring" in German. Its vast gardens and evolving architectural character reflect over three centuries of Habsburg taste and patronage, and the ensemble has served as a major tourist destination since the mid-1950s. The palace is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
