The Belvedere is a baroque palace complex in Vienna's Landstraße district, designed principally by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and completed in the early eighteenth century as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. The ensemble comprises two palaces—the Upper and Lower Belvedere—along with an Orangery, Palace Stables, and formal Baroque garden. Built during a period of Habsburg prosperity following Prince Eugene's military victories against the Ottoman Empire, the Belvedere exemplifies Vienna's architectural flowering as the imperial capital. Today it functions as one of Austria's major art museums, with the Upper Belvedere housing the permanent collection of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present, the Lower Belvedere dedicated to special exhibitions, and Belvedere 21 showcasing contemporary work. The palace and garden ensemble is recognized as part of Vienna's Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
