The Winter Palace of Prince Eugene stands as one of Vienna's most magnificent Baroque edifices, located on the narrow Himmelpfortgasse in the Innere Stadt district. Built between 1695 and 1724, the palace was designed initially by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt following his predecessor's plans. Originally serving as the winter residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy—who maintained his summer quarters at the Belvedere—the palace was acquired by Empress Maria Theresa through auction in 1738 for the imperial court. Subsequently repurposed by Nicolò Pacassi in 1752 as the seat of state institutions, it housed the Austrian finance ministry from 1848 through the dissolution of the Habsburg Empire in 1918, and has served as the Austrian Ministry of Finance since 1919. The building underwent extensive renovation from 2007 to 2013.
