The Vienna State Opera is a 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival opera house located in Vienna's Innere Stadt district, built between 1861 and 1869. Designed by August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, with designs by Josef Hlávka, it was the first major building constructed on the Vienna Ring Road, funded and commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Inaugurated in 1869 as the Vienna Court Opera in the presence of the Emperor and Empress Elisabeth, the building succeeded an earlier court opera within the Hofburg and took its current name following the establishment of the First Austrian Republic in 1921. Beyond hosting opera performances, the venue is home to the Vienna State Ballet and annually stages the Vienna Opera Ball during carnival season. The Vienna Philharmonic draws its members from the opera house orchestra.
