The North Dakota State Capitol stands in Bismarck as a 21-story Art Deco tower and the tallest habitable building in the state, located at 600 East Boulevard Avenue. The capitol anchors a 160-acre campus that houses the state's legislative and judicial branches alongside numerous government agencies. Surrounding the main building are five other structures erected as state government expanded, with parks, walking trails, and monuments that document North Dakota's history, making the grounds a notable civic attraction. Though expansion and improvement plans were developed in 2000, much of the proposed work remained unfinished by 2012, and many state agencies continue to occupy separate facilities throughout Bismarck.
