The Olympic Stadium of Athens, located in Marousi in northern Athens, is Greece's largest sports venue with a capacity of 75,000. Built in 1982 for the European Athletics Championships and constructed as part of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA), it is named after Spyros Louis, winner of the first modern Olympic marathon gold medal in 1896. The stadium underwent substantial renovation from 2002 to 2004, during which architect Santiago Calatrava designed its distinctive roof structure. It served as the main venue for the 2004 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, including opening and closing ceremonies. Originally home to major Greek football clubs including Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, and AEK Athens, the stadium has also hosted the 1991 Mediterranean Games, the 1997 World Athletics Championships, and three European Cup Finals. It remains the current home ground of Panathinaikos for UEFA competition matches.
