Omotesando Hills is a mixed-use shopping and residential complex in the Jingūmae district of central Tokyo, designed by Tadao Ando and completed in 2005. Stretching 250 meters along Omotesandō, a prominent shopping street in Aoyama, the development contains over 130 retail shops and 38 apartments. Its construction, funded at $330 million by Mori Building, proved controversial: the complex replaced the Bauhaus-inspired Dōjunkai Aoyama Apartments, a 1927 structure built after the Kantō earthquake, reigniting debate over Japan's approach to architectural preservation. A reconstructed section of the demolished apartments was incorporated into the complex's southeast portion. Local resistance to Ando's appointment—attributed to concerns that his work was too fashionable for the area—underscores the tension between development and community expectations that defined the project.
