Standing 540.1 metres tall in Moscow's Ostankinsky District, the Ostankino Tower is a television and radio tower designed by Nikolai Nikitin and completed in 1960 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. Conceived by architects Leonid Batalov, Lev Shchipakin, Dmitri Burdin, and Moisei Shkud alongside Nikitin, it was the first free-standing structure to surpass 500 metres in height and held the title of world's tallest structure from 1967 to 1974. Owned by the Moscow branch of the Russian TV and Radio Broadcasting Network, the tower serves Moscow and the surrounding Moscow Region, as well as parts of Vladimir and Kaluga regions, reaching an audience that expanded from approximately 10 million at its completion to over 15 million by 2014. As of 2026, it remains the tallest free-standing structure in Europe and the 15th tallest in the world, visible from numerous cities in the Moscow Region under favorable weather conditions.
