Located in ancient Ostia, the seaport of Imperial Rome, the Ostia Synagogue stands as one of the world's oldest synagogues and the oldest yet uncovered in Europe outside the Land of Israel. Built during the reign of Claudius (41–54 AD), the structure represents a remarkable survival of ancient Roman Jewish religious architecture. The synagogue remained in active use through the fifth century AD, bearing witness to the presence and persistence of the Jewish community in the Roman Empire during its most expansive period.
