Peveril Castle is a ruined 11th-century fortress overlooking Castleton in Derbyshire, founded between 1066 and 1086 by William Peverel, a Norman tenant-in-chief who held lands across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. The castle served as the caput of the Honour of Peverel and anchored the economic life of its barony. After Henry II confiscated the estates in 1155, the king visited multiple times, hosting Malcolm IV of Scotland in 1157. The castle narrowly avoided assault in 1216 during a dispute between King John and William de Ferrers over its control. By the 13th century, building work had established its final form, but decline set in when John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, granted the barony in the late 14th century and ordered materials stripped for reuse. The Duchy of Lancaster has owned and administered the castle since Gaunt's time. Today it commands views across the Hope Valley and Cave Dale.
